Write With Jane - 17 - Tiny Adjustments

Head down in the show, just stopping by to send out a couple of little thoughts, loosely arranged around the theme of making meaningful adjustments in thinking.

Today from Jane's archives, the significance of tiny adjustments can make as she illustrates two similar but different examples of an act break. This reminds me of a spirited discussion about cupcakes I had a little while back with my story editor. I have a male lead who works as a baker, and in one scene he was making cupcakes with pink frosting. The contrast between hunky guy and frivolous pastry appeals to me, but Story Editor objected - the cupcakes were emasculating the character. "What if that's Scott Speedman frosting the cupcakes?" I asked him. (In my dreams, by the way.) Good visual, Story Editor agreed. "All right," he said. "Just make the frosting white."

Problem solved.

Sometimes we look for big fixes when little ones will do.

And in other links, today Cary Tennis, whom I love, advocates making changes in the story you're telling yourself. What story of your own would you like to change?
